Fawn

Building the Product She Could Not Find in The Market

Most personal care brands start with a market gap analysis. Fawn started with a body she could not trust most products with. Her analytical chemistry background gave her vocabulary for what most consumers never articulate: the difference between ingredients that serve the user and those that serve the cost sheet.

When she co-founded BIOM, the founding question was not what the market wanted. It was what she and her co-founder would personally stand behind. The result is a reduction-first philosophy: remove everything unnecessary, keep everything that works.

About Fawn Bowe

Fawn Bowe is the co-founder of BIOM, a personal care brand built on one conviction: the products people use every day should be safe for their bodies. She launched alongside a dentist co-founder, combining analytical chemistry and cosmetic science expertise to create formulas they were genuinely excited to use.

BIOM’s products, including NOBS toothpaste tablets and H2.O facial cleanser, are built for people who read ingredient labels. Fawn grew up with sensitive skin. That was not a marketing angle. It was a daily constraint that became a founding motivation.

Key Takeaways

  • Fawn co-founded BIOM with a dentist, combining chemistry and clinical expertise for genuinely differentiated formulations.
  • BIOM leads with subtraction: removing unnecessary additives rather than stacking marketing-friendly ingredients.
  • The brand found early traction on TikTok by demonstrating the ingredient story in a format that rewarded specificity.
  • NOBS toothpaste tablets reduce plastic waste alongside chemical load, embedding sustainability in the product format itself.
  • International expansion is the current growth priority, extending a science-first brand into ingredient-conscious markets.

The Interview

You came from analytical chemistry, not traditional beauty. How did that shape what BIOM became?

My background gave me a way of reading formulas that most consumers do not have. When I looked at conventional personal care, I did not see innovation. I was seeing cost optimization dressed as science. I was tired of failing tests that should not exist. My co-founder and I decided to build from what we actually needed.

Why tablets for toothpaste? The format is still unfamiliar to most consumers.

The tube is one of the most wasteful pieces of packaging in the bathroom. Every toothpaste contains mostly water. We decided if we were going to rethink the formula, we should rethink the format, too. Tablets eliminate the plastic, eliminate excess water, and let us be more precise about what we deliver.

TikTok became a significant channel for BIOM. What does the platform do for a science-forward brand?

It lets you show your work. You cannot demonstrate an ingredient comparison in a magazine ad. TikTok lets us explain actual science in real time, and the people who care about that are exactly who we want to reach. They are not looking for the cheapest toothpaste. They want honesty about ingredients.

What does international expansion look like for a brand built on formulation integrity?

The sensitivity problem I built BIOM to solve is not geographically specific. Consumers across markets ask the same questions about what they put on their bodies. Our formulation story travels because it is grounded in science, not a cultural moment.

What would you tell a founder entering a crowded personal care category?

Do not formulate to what sells. Formulate what works. The market is full of products optimized for shelf presence. There is a persistent unmet demand for products optimized for the person using them. Build for them honestly, and they will find you.

Lessons for Founders

  • Start from genuine personal need rather than market gap analysis to produce formulations with built-in credibility.
  • Rethink product format alongside formula: packaging constraints are often reformulation opportunities in disguise.
  • Use platforms that reward explanation for products whose differentiation lives in what competitors cannot show.
  • Science-backed positioning is geographically portable in a way that trend-based positioning rarely is.
